Kender

abstractions from Havana

Kender (Santiago Luis Ferrer, born 1965 , Havanna, Cuba)

Kender's deep investigation of abstract art in the context of cuban history has led to a lifelong discourse with the ideas and principles departing from the most well known cuban groupe of abstract artists, who brought abstract art to cuba in the 50ies, called "las once".

Kender's profound academic background began as a student in the „ Academia de Bellas Artes San Alejandro“, Havana, Cuba. With the award "Servando Cabrera" Kender received also one of the most prestigious awards of his country, among different other awards.

His strong connection with the cuban people "en la calle" and his religious background give his work a deep spiritual and vibrating force, which can be experienced by every single artwork.

art critic Chiara Chanali describes his work as following:
"Kender's research is progressively built through pictorial cycles that revolve around intimate and existential themes or the feeling of mysticism and animism of Cuban religion.
(...) Kender's painting, continues, reveals, anguish and disturbances of the human psyche. The innate vitality of the artist is reflected in the painting through the exacerbation of the chromatic masses, with a coherent exaltation of the timbral rythm."
